What is a Rule Set Editor?

Personalization aims at showing targeted results, recommendations and ads on the basis of individual visitor’s browsing history. It allows brands to deliver satisfactory customer experience and ensure smooth experience in every interaction with the brand. With personalization, the right content can be sent to right people at the right time through right platform.

In Sitecore, the rule set editor is used to add rules and actions to various components.

The Rule Set Editor is a simple tool that uses logic-based rules for content management. Setting the Rule Set Editor enables one to create conditional renderings, whereby it becomes easy to personalize and control contacts’ experiences.

The Rule Set Editor has three essential elements:

  • Conditions – It comprises of logical statements to determine the genuineness of the condition. Though Sitecore has various default conditions, it is always possible to introduce your own conditions.
  • Actions – These are the logical steps that follow when you satisfy any of the conditions. Actions can specify whether to hide or display content when the conditions are satisfied.
  • Rules – Rules need defining of conditions and actions before ensuring that the standards are met. It associates with multiple actions and conditions.

The Rule Set Editor allows you to combine conditions with actions to enable you to create rules to implement personalization, run scripts, create steps in engagement plans, and many other activities.

Personalization Conditions

As mentioned above, Sitecore has many personalization conditions by default. Generally, you can use most of the conditions and personalize your content when using XM. However, specific conditions are only available when you run xDB and full XP.

The personalized conditions are organized in a specific manner, depending on their categories. The detailed list of categories is available at here

Pattern card-based or Profile-based rules

This type of personalization rules involves creating profiles or pattern cards. Based on these patterns, we set up the personalized rule over the item.

The application of this rule is simple:

  • Move the items over the presentation details section
  • Click on the ‘Edit’ button and select the rendering component
  • Click over the ‘Personalize’ button and set up the personalization rule over the specific item

These steps will open a new rule set editor. Specify the default text name and click over the ‘edit rule’ icon. It enables you to select your rules depending on your requirement.

It is also essential to set the source of the data of personalized component content. Select ‘Datasource’ from the content section of the Rule Set editor.
