Future of eCommerce Business

ECommerce businesses are drifting away from legacy frameworks to personalize customer experience across customers entire buying journey. Futuristic businesses are migrating from legacy framework to composable architecture that enables quick personalization.

First, let’s quickly understand how Headless Commerce, Composable Commerce and MACH all are related to setting the stage.

Headless Commerce implies decoupling the customer-facing frontend from the commerce functions and business logic in the backend system. This stands in contrast with the legacy system where the backend and the frontend of your commerce architecture are a part of the same entity and to make any change to the front-end, you need to change the configurations from the backend (a cumbersome and technical approach).

Headless Commerce

MACH is a marketing acronym for:

  • Microservices: Independently developed, deployed and managed business functionalities.
  • API-first: Functionality exposed through an Application Programming Interface to tie together two or more applications or services.
  • Cloud-Native SaaS: Software-as-a-Service to realize the full potential of the cloud, beyond storage and hosting.
  • Headless: The front-end user experience is completely decoupled front and backend for freedom of integrating devices and channels.

Headless Commerce

Composable Commerce leverages modern technology (including MACH) and layers of support to compose and optimize unique commerce experience for every customer.

Why Composable Commerce?

Composable commerce is a modern approach to quickly personalize commerce storefront for each consumer, depending upon their lifestyle. This is done only at the front-end without disturbing the back end which requires technical knowledge and inter-department coordination, postponing real-time personalization.

Get a brief about composable commerce

Let’s look at the technical side of composable architecture- composable architecture leverages Packaged Business Capabilities (PBCs). By Gartner’s definition, a packaged business capability is a “software component that represents a well-defined business capability, recognizable as such by a business user…[and] consists of a bounded collection comprising a data schema and a set of services, APIs and event channels.”

If you’re thinking, “PBCs sound a lot like microservices”, you’re not far off. By Gartner’s definition, a PBC involves a grouping of APIs (a bounded collection) that serve a specific business capability versus microservices which are more tightly scoped and granular (though microservices may also have multiple APIs and endpoints within them).

However, some microservices do fit the criteria for a PBC. If a microservice represents a business capability clearly to a business user, it qualifies.

A composable commerce architecture is typically cloud-native, whether private or public. Most of the PBCs are available on the market as SaaS offerings.
